For over 40 years the ladies of Unique have been cutting hair in this 11-chair barber shop. Grandfathers bring their grandsons here and reminisce of their younger, college days in this shop just opposite Meiji University. Everyone -- punks and professors, businessmen shady and legal, students and salarymen -- is made welcome in this no-nonsense shop staffed by a coterie of cheerful women of certain ages who will, while chatting with the next coiffeuse, swiftly and expertly scissor-cut your hair for just 1300 yen -- one of the cheapest trims you'll find anywhere in Tokyo. A shampoo and a quick, but effective massage about the shoulders and neck can be had for a couple hundred yen more. And of course, if you want the luxury of hot towels, hot lather, and a shave with a straight razor, they will oblige. In and out in 20 minutes. The neighborhood gossip comes free.
