Deco's Dog Cafe: Daikanyama
Which of these items doesn't belong? 1) Cabbage rolls with tomato sauce; 2) Quiche; 3) Homemade low-fat dog kibble? The answer is "None of the Above" - all of these dishes are actually part of the expansive dog's menu at Deco's Dog Cafe. (Quiz takers who wrote in "Cat" get half credit.)

In a city where it is difficult to own a dog, it is a pleasure to have a cafe that not only allows dogs but also caters to them, literally! Deco, the cafe owner, used to enjoyed sharing mealtimes with her mini-dachshund whom she fed nothing but human food. To her shock, the dog passed away at an early age, so Deco began to study nutrition for dogs. She eventually penned the recipe book "50 Recipes Dogs Will Love," and last year opened Deco's Dog Cafe in Daikanyama. The recipes focus on the minerals and vitamins that dogs need, but appear so similar to human menu items that many guests have actually eaten the wrong thing - and still enjoyed it! She has creatively expanded her dog's menu and now has regular customers ranging from Great Danes to Mexican Chihuahuas.

Stomach growling, I was joined on my first trip to Deco's by Joy Kobayashi, an eight-year-old male corgi. We both ordered the Chicken Roll with Veggies and Cheese and - after a vulgar display of snapping jaws, slurping tongue, and slobbering drool - it was gone. The dog ate his blander, canine-friendly version pretty quickly too!
