Yen Bar: Shibuya
Yen Bar is the coolest and friendliest bar you'll find in Shibuya - possibly anywhere in Tokyo. An extra bonus (for us girls) is the master Ono-san, who is hip, handsome and single - as are most of his patrons (except that the girls tend toward pretty), most of whom are engaged in one or another of the creative arts. I've met tattoo artists, rappers, stylists and film directors sitting at the bar. And there's no shortage of DJs to man the decks every Friday and Saturday night.

The bar itself is quite spacious. The front, with a small balcony overlooking Koen-dori, is furnished like a cafe with a half dozen small tables. A solid-wood bar fronted by eight high stools sits in the center. And in back is a comfortable lounge area which could accommodate up to twenty (though perhaps in a pinch). An electronic darts board, now located on the wall opposite the bar, has always been a well-patronized feature of Yen Bar.

The walls at the cafe end and around the bar are painted vivid red. They are decorated here and there with designs - rendered directly onto the surface - of soaring phoenixes and busty women. The walls in the lounge are covered in black marbled wallpaper flecked with gold, which makes it darker and more private in feeling.

Yen Bar has just turned five and you can bet the shots were flying that night. I'd also put money on it being around for many more years to come...
